On the Airbus Perlan Mission II

 

Aviation had always a mandatory adventure component. Since its inception, before Flyer took off in 1903, adventure, challenge and epic has been associated to the magic of flying. The riskiest first years of flying, Blériot, Fokker, Amelia Earhart, Charles Lindbergh, the two World Wars, spanish Plus-Ultra, the golden commercial age, the Constellation, the X-planes, Kelly Johnson, Tupolev, Mikoyan Gurevich, McDonnel Douglas, the 747, the Concorde, A380, TWA-PanAm, Stealth planes, Airbus/Boeing, SkunkWorks, SR-71, etc. are history forever. But in the 21st century flying is just another mean of transport, new programmes as 787 or A350, F35, military contracts, A400 and manufacturers trying to get some Airbus/Boeing market share. Do we still have any adventure to see? I hope so, this is what the Airbus Perlan Mission II is trying to achieve, new challenges with the basic way of flying, soaring with a glider. A plane trying to get higher than any other manned aircraft has ever flown and without engines, just wind. Do you remember Red Bull Stratos Jump and Felix Baumgartner or the recent jump of Google VP Alan Eustace? Like them, this is another epic project.

On Paper Technology and Boeing 777

 

“Where technology meets aviation.” This is the aeriaA’s motto, but not all the technologies are binary data, aerodynamics and fluid dynamics, electronic, etc. Across the mankind history every significant period had it revolutionary technologies, and once the paper was one of these advanced technologies. Before showing this outstanding project, on of the main reasons of writing this post is a comment I read about this project. “What a pity, so much ingenuity and time wasted for nothing” I tried to understand this comment and where was the wasting stuff. Where others see waste work I see talent, passion with a lot effort and meticulousness. Returning to the issue, this is about an impressive combination of the papyrus/parchment and a Wright Brother’s Flyer descendent technologies, a full Boeing 777 made of paper in 1:60 scale, but do not miss the view at the big plane, please see the details, details as mechanics on paper. After thinking how to focus this post, I thought, why not ask to the author? Here you have our conversation and the great pictures and videos he took.

AirTalk with Mark Sapp AirIT’s SVP Business Development

 

I have the pleasure to show you the AIrTalk with Mark Sapp, SVP Business Development at AirIT, a Fraport Company, one of the airport’s leading technology firms. I met Mark at LinkedIn and we started to cross comments, opinions in the different group’s debates. One day I asked Mark about doing an interview and he kindly accept it, at aeriaA I wanted to know more of one of the most recognized airport’s technology companies, AirIT. aeriaA is an aviation and its technology place, so it is mandatory to have the big players on stage (you might know there is a big space for the mid and small players too, visit the Project’s menu above). So, it’s time for introducing our guest, I’ve stolen his own profile’s presentation.

Mark Sapp has been in and around commercial aviation his entire life. The son of an airline A&P mechanic, he began his own professional career on the air carrier side in 1972 including a combined 15 years with Eastern, Braniff International and Midway. With the dawning realization that airlines might not be the best bet for long term career stability, he moved into the travel and transportation industry information technology sector in 1987.

Working with both airports and airlines, Mark’s IT resume includes experience gained with RPA, Sabre Decision Technologies, IBM Global Services, SITA and Air-Transport IT Services. Mark joined AirIT in early 2003 as National Sales Director and currently serves as the company’s SVP Business Development.

Mark is a frequent industry speaker and moderator, currently serves as a member of AAAE’s Corporate Committee steering group as well as a member of all six AAAE regional chapters. Remaining a life-long student of the industry he calls home, Mark’s professional passion is helping airports leverage technology to reduce costs, optimize cash flow and improve operational efficiencies.

Airtalk with Steve Zerkowitz and Ana Saez (TITAN A-CDM book co-authors)

Some months ago, I clicked on a incoming link at Twitter and I downloaded the book “TITAN – Going beyond A-CDM” (you can freely download it clicking the link), I only had some notions about A-CDM and I wanted to deepen on it. So, a friday evening I read it in one go, the concepts were perfectly explained from the scratch, introduction to A-CDM, the extending necessity and the TITAN Project under the 7th EU Framework. Its 75 pages are full of information, very concise and very well explained and developed. So Turnaround Integration in Trajectory and Network (TITAN) got all my attention then.

After its reading, I wanted to know more about this project and authors, so I put in contact with Steve Zerkowitz and Ana Saez, the co-authors of the book, and started to talk. I proposed then an interview the book, the EU projects experience and about A-CDM. This is result, one of the best and informative talk we had at aeriaA. I hope you’ll find it interesting.

AirTalk with…Pedro Lobo. Innovagency Co-Founder (ANA Airports App)

At Aeriaa, Innovagency is not a newbie, they represent one of the first posts about the beauty of  their ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and Madeira Airports smartphone/tablet app and its use for tracking a flight (see both posts here, beauty and use). As an aviation and technology related blog, the airports’ apps gather both worlds, it is unquestionable the tremendous potential of a mobile application as a “partner” of any passenger at any airport. I think it will one of the most successful combinations of technology to the serve of the people and the transportation business. It allows to put every passenger in contact with the business and services owners, providers ant whole process of travel experience, form its conception to to the destination and beyond, or perhaps aren’t there further duties to do after reaching the destination? Or aren’t there a satisfaction sense after the trip to be analysed or exploited?. A College’s teacher of mine, Javier Recuenco (you can know more about him at his LinkedIn profile and in about.me) is evangelizing the concept behind this,  Personalization, for me this is the ones of the better platforms for applying “Personotechnics”, we wear devices, we see and being seen with them more than ever in the history.

Coming back to the AirTalk, I’m glad to introduce Pedro Lobo, Co-founder and Head of International Business Development and Communication at Innovagency. I wanted to ask him about the design process of this app in a special environment as the airports are. I also asked him about some technologies aspects and project’s topics as testings phase.

I have the pleasure to premiere a new section at Aeriaa, AirTalks. These are interviews with people that I think they can contribute with interesting issues, thoughts and opinions. I have to say that these interviews don’t have any personal commercial benefit or have nothing to do with my professional daily work. Jürgen Weder is the Neuropie’s CEO. Neuropie is a 10 years old swiss based consultancy firm. Zeus is their star product for providing operational business intelligence to airports.
